Polyurethane Coatings

Solvent-free polyurethane coatings have become a popular choice for potable water tanks due to their durability, hygiene properties and long-term performance. WRAS-approved polyurethane systems work effectively on concrete, steel and GRP substrates, offering strong corrosion and erosion resistance. Their solvent-free composition makes them safer during application and eliminates the risk of solvent-related breakdown over time.

Vinyl Ester Linings

Vinyl ester systems offer superior resistance to aggressive chemicals, acids and solvents. Cementitious Coatings

GRP Relining Systems

How Do You Choose the Right Tank Lining?

Selecting the correct lining system requires careful consideration of several factors. Getting it right the first time avoids premature failure and the expense of relining work: 

  • Contents of the tank. The stored substance dictates the coating chemistry required. Drinking water demands WRAS or DWI-approved systems. Aggressive chemicals need vinyl ester or specialist formulations. Fuel storage requires linings that resist hydrocarbon degradation.
  • Substrate condition. Concrete tanks with cracks need structural repairs before lining. Steel substrates require thorough surface preparation to ensure proper adhesion. GRP may need specific surface treatment before a new coating is applied.
  • Operating conditions. Temperature fluctuations, mechanical abrasion, UV exposure and pressure all influence which lining system will perform effectively over the long term.
  • Downtime and access. Some coatings cure quickly and allow a faster return to service, while others require multiple coats with intermediate curing periods. The available maintenance window should influence material selection.

What Causes Tank Lining Failures?

Understanding common failure modes helps inform better specification and maintenance decisions: 

  • Blistering occurs when moisture becomes trapped beneath the coating, causing it to lift and bubble. This is often the result of inadequate surface preparation or applying coatings to damp substrates.
  • Delamination happens when the lining loses adhesion and peels away from the tank surface. Poor cleaning, insufficient surface profiling or incompatible primer systems are typical causes.
  • Corrosion beneath the lining can develop at weak points such as welds and joints if the coating does not fully seal the surface. Once corrosion starts underneath, it can spread undetected until the lining fails visibly.

What Is the Difference Between Tank Lining and Tank Relining?

Tank lining refers to applying a protective coating to a new or structurally sound tank. Tank relining describes the restoration of a tank where the existing coating has degraded. Relining involves removing old coatings, repairing any structural damage such as cracks or corrosion, and then applying a complete new lining system. In most cases, relining a tank is significantly more cost-effective than full replacement.
